Brownsville, Texas: the Last City in the United States
No, that doesn't mean Brownsville is the last remaining city in the country after a zombie plague or a nuclear war, it means that Brownsville is the southernmost city in the United States, snuggled right up along the border with sunny Mexico.
The town anchors one end of three international bridges: the Brownsville and Matamoros Bridge (the B&M or "old" bridge), the Gateway International Bridge (or "new" bridge) and the Veteran's International Bridge (sometimes known as "Los Tomates"). The city also has 11 public bus routes.

Brownsville, TX's proximity to Mexico, the Rio Grande River and the ocean combine with its low elevation to give it a subtropical climate. While a lot of Texas and Mexico is desert, Brownsville enjoys a wellspring of broadleaf evergreens like palm trees on every corner. It's a little piece of Mexico's tropical resort paradise right here at home!
Due to Brownsville's being a border town, it has a large Hispanic-American community. As many as 90% of Brownsville's citizens identify themselves as being at least part Hispanic. This means that Brownsville, TX has a rich cultural heritage and many delicious Mexican restaurants for everyone to enjoy.
While you may be tempted to lie around in the sun all day admiring the palm trees and the ocean with a margarita in your hand, there are many other things to do in Brownsville. You could upgrade your education at the University of Texas at Brownsville, play 18 holes at the Brownsville Country Club, go shopping at Sunrise Mall, or visit the animals down in the Gladys Porter Zoo.
Also not to be missed if you are a history buff are the old Civil War and Mexican-American war battlefields located nearby. Brownsville began as a fort which came under siege by the Mexican Army in 1846. General Zachary Taylor (who would later become President Zachary Taylor), on his way to assist, became embroiled in the Battle of Palo Alto and the Battle of Resaca de la Palma very close to present-day Brownsville. On his eventual arrival he re-named the fort "Fort Brown" after Major Jacob Brown, who had died during the siege. Amateur historians can visit the cannon outside Texas Southernmost College in present-day Brownsville, as it marks the spot where Major Brown fell.
